BC Leadership 2011
Helping Shape BC's Future
Both of BC's major political parties chose new leaders in early 2011. This was a special moment in history, a moment when the choices we individually and collectively made could have had a profound impact on the future of the province.
The choice of leaders for the two major political parties can determine the envelope of what is possible to achieve for the environment for perhaps 10 years. Since far fewer people select party leaders than vote in provincial elections, an individual's leadership vote is more powerful in a party leadership race. This is as accessible as democracy gets.
British Columbians have strong environmental values yet those values are rarely reflected in the governments that get elected. This was a moment to inform and influence the fabric of party leadership. That is why Conservation Voters of BC is launched BC Leadership 2011.
The BC Liberals chose their new leader, Premier Christy Clark, on February 26th. See below for the environmental commitments and statements made by the BC Liberal leadership candidates, as well as our ranking of those candidates before the vote.
The BC NDP chose Adrian Dix as their new leader on April 17th. Click the candidates names below to see where they stood on environmental issues during the campaigns.
