Next Macleans’ Cover Puts Victoria Sewage In National Spotlight

(Victoria, BC) Fresh from its success in the May provincial election, today the Conservation Voters of BC released its criteria for the November 19 municipal elections. The organization has decided to focus its efforts on municipalities in the Victoria Capitol Region, with candidates’ commitment to secondary sewage treatment as the key.

“We’re looking for candidates with a strong commitment to breaking the bureaucratic constipation on the sewage treatment issue,” said Matt Price, Coordinator. “Our endorsements will be made based on the candidates’ position on sewage treatment and environmental experience, as well as on the viability of their campaign.”

In the recent provincial election, Conservation Voters of BC volunteers knocked on 5,000 doors and targeted another 5,000 pieces of mail to key neighbourhoods, helping tip the elections to conservation candidates in Saanich South and Vancouver Fairview.

The organization is open to endorsing candidates of any political persuasion, as long as they are environmentally minded. The candidates must also be real contenders.

“We have heard that the Victoria Sewage Alliance – made up of groups like the Georgia Strait Alliance and T. Buck Suzuki Foundation – will be asking candidates a question on sewage,” said Price. “We’ll be watching the answers to that question closely.”

Meanwhile, the next cover of Macleans magazine will be devoted to raw sewage dumping in Canada, again embarrassing Victoria with a national spotlight.

Candidates in Colwood, Esquimalt, Langford, Oak Bay, Saanich, Victoria and View Royal who are interested in an endorsement are encouraged to submit a short bio to info (at) conservationvoters.ca.
