FIRST FEDERAL ENDORSEMENTS RELEASED
Conservatives In Penalty Box Over Kyoto
(Victoria, BC) The Conservation Voters of BC (CVBC) announced its first federal election endorsements today. Stephen Owen received an endorsement in Vancouver- Quadra, and Denise Savoie in Victoria. More endorsements will be considered in the New Year.
“Stephen and Denise are strong conservationists and will make great contributions in Ottawa,” said Matt Price, CVBC Coordinator. “If more candidates followed their example, Canada would quickly be on a more sustainable footing.”
CVBC is a non-partisan organization, but ruled out considering any Conservative candidates after Stephen Harper failed to commit to CVBC that he would stay in Kyoto. “No candidate who wants to play Alberta Roulette with our life support system deserves support,” said Price.
CVBC has played a role in helping elect environmentally minded candidates in the May provincial election and in the November municipal elections. Endorsements often come with campaign assistance parallel to the candidates’ campaigns, reaching out to voters to inform them of the endorsements.
Stephen Owen has been the MP for Vancouver-Quadra since 2000, and has served in cabinet since 2002. As Minister of Public Works, he converted government vehicles to low emission types and upgraded Canada’s buildings to be more energy efficient. As Minister of Western Economic Diversification he has pushed a green economy agenda, including investing in alternative energy. He has served as Ombudsman of British Columbia, as a Director of Ecotrust Canada, and as Adjunct Professor of Resource & Environmental Law at the University of British Columbia.
Denise Savoie has been an environmental champion for many years, as one of the founding members of the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition and active on creating Victoria’s greenways and trails network. As a popular two-term city councillor, Denise pioneered the ‘triple bottom line’ approach to development – requiring projects like Victoria’s innovative new Dockside Green development to meet economic, social and environmental goals.
