CONSERVATION VOTERS PICK'S IT'S ENVIRONMENTAL CHAMPIONS
September 17, 2008
(Victoria, BC) The Conservation Voters of BC (CVBC) announced its federal election endorsements today. Briony Penn received an endorsement in Saanich Gulf Islands, and Denise Savoie in Victoria. More endorsements will be considered in the coming days.
“Briony and Denise have strong records on the environment and will make great contributions in Ottawa,” said Naomi Devine, Regional Coordinator for CVBC. “With the environment at the top of the agenda for Canadians they can lead by example and put Canada on a more sustainable footing.”
CVBC is a non-partisan organization, but ruled out considering any Conservative candidates at this time due to their poor record on combating Global Warming. "Their ongoing support for the tar sands and refusal to put hard caps on carbon emissions is a failure to address the most important issue of our time," said Devine, adding that Conservation Voters would consider endorsing a Conservative candidate if an environmental champion emerged from within their ranks.
CVBC has played an important role in helping elect environmentally minded candidates in previous federal, provincial and municipal elections. 15 of the 20 candidates it has endorsed have been elected. Conservation voters often campaigns on behalf of the candidates it endorses and has played a key role in tight races in the province.
Briony Penn has been an environmental leader in our community since childhood. As a child she saved her Christmas Hill neighbourhood from bulldozers, and in her 20s pushed for the creation of the Galloping Goose regional trail. She helped stop clearcut logging on Salt Spring Island, is a co-founder of the Land Conservancy of BC, an honorary director of the BC Sustainable Energy Association, and is a former director of the Raincoast Foundation. A true champion for the environment and social justice, she has a talent for linking the biggest issues of the day with peoples everyday lives and quality of living.
Denise Savoie has been an environmental champion for many years, as one of the founding members of the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition and active on creating Victoria’s greenways and trails network. As Victoria's MP in Ottawa she introduced legislation formalizing the moratorium on oil and gas drilling and tanker traffic in BC’s fragile coastal waters. She also voted for absolute targets, set in law, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and supports investments in clean energy and a green economy.
