CANADIANS URGED TO TAKE THE TEN TONNE CHALLENGE
Climate Security Requires Losing Conservative Weight

(Victoria, October 19, 2006) Canadians are being urged today to take the “Ten Tonne Challenge” – to commit to dropping ten tonnes of Conservative MPs from the House of Commons, the approximate weight of the caucus.

“The biggest thing standing in between Canadians and climate security for their kids is about ten tonnes of Conservative MPs,” said Matt Price, Coordinator of the Conservation Voters of BC. “Fortunately, citizens don’t need to buy a new StairMaster or to give up carbs to shed unhealthy Conservative weight – they just need to vote for somebody else on election day.”

This calculation led to the Ten Tonne Challenge:

8,800 kg = 110 male Conservative MPs @ 80kg ave (excluding Garth Turner)
826 kg = 14 female Conservative MPs @ 59kg ave
9,626 kg = Total Conservative MP weight
10,000 kg = Ten tonnes

“Regarding the so-called ‘intensity’ issue, it won’t do to just elect lighter Conservatives,” said Price. “We need an absolute reduction so that they don’t have the votes to do any more damage to Canada’s Kyoto commitments.”
