HARPER GIVEN ULTIMATUM ON KYOTO

(Victoria, BC) Today the Conservation Voters of BC (CVBC) gave Stephen Harper an ultimatum on Kyoto: commit in writing within a week that he would not renege on Canada’s commitments to cut greenhouse gasses under the Protocol, or disqualify his BC candidates from endorsement during the current federal election.

“We are a non-partisan organization, but the future of our climate is too serious to consider candidates who would support its destruction,” said Matt Price, CVBC Coordinator. “We will not let Harper play Alberta Roulette with our life support system.”

Canada is currently hosting the United Nations Climate Change Conference underway in Montreal to discuss Kyoto’s next steps. Harper has questioned the science behind climate change and has questioned Canada’s participation in the Protocol.

In the 2004 Federal Election, CVBC ran a humorous ad targeting Harper on Kyoto that can be found at www.conservationvoters.ca (pdf). The open letter to Stephen Harper on Kyoto for this election can also be found on the website.
